How It Started

A Love Letter to Neapolitan Craft

Punch pizza began in 2005 when founder David Rocco returned from a culinary pilgrimage through Naples, Italy, obsessed with one simple truth: great pizza needs great ingredients, nothing more.

Armed with a family-recipe dough, a handbuilt wood-fired oven imported from Naples, and an unwavering commitment to fresh, local produce, David opened our first location on East Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis. The line was out the door on day one — and hasn't stopped since.

Today, Punch pizza remains a family-owned, community-rooted restaurant. We still source our San Marzano tomatoes from Italy, hand-pull our mozzarella fresh each morning, and fire every pizza in under 90 seconds at 900°F. Some things never change — and they shouldn't.

2005
The First Punch

David Rocco opens the original Punch pizza on East Hennepin Ave in Minneapolis. A single wood-fired oven, six tables, and an 80-seat waitlist on opening night.

Named "Best New Restaurant" by Minneapolis Star Tribune
2008
Second Location Opens in St. Paul

Demand drove expansion to our Murray Avenue location in St. Paul, bringing authentic Neapolitan punch pizza to a new neighborhood. Two ovens, double the joy.

2011
Catering Program Launches

Corporate and event catering became a cornerstone of our business, bringing our mobile wood-fired ovens to weddings, festivals, and Fortune 500 company events across Minnesota.

2015
Decade of Pizza — and a James Beard Nod

Celebrating 10 years, Punch pizza received a James Beard Award nomination for Outstanding Restaurant. Chef Maria Chen joined our team, elevating seasonal menu offerings.

We formalized partnerships with 12 local Minnesota farms, committing to source 70% of produce locally. Our seasonal ingredient calendar was born from this initiative.

Online Ordering & Community Fund

Launched our digital ordering platform and the Punch Community Fund — donating 1% of annual revenue to Minneapolis food access programs.
